Do your lights flicker?

Why Do My Lights Flicker? When It’s Normal—and When to Call an Electrician

A flickering light may seem like a minor annoyance, but sometimes it’s your home’s electrical system telling you something needs attention. While an occasional flicker can have a simple explanation, frequent dimming, pulsing or flickering throughout your home may indicate a problem that should be evaluated by a licensed electrician.

For homeowners in Charlotte and surrounding communities, knowing the difference can help prevent a small electrical issue from becoming a larger—and potentially more expensive—problem.

One Flickering Light? Start With the Simple Things

If only one lamp or fixture is flickering, the problem may be as simple as a loose bulb. Turn the light off, allow the bulb to cool and make sure it is securely installed.

If tightening or replacing the bulb doesn’t solve the problem, the fixture, switch or electrical connection could be the culprit.

LED bulbs can also flicker when paired with an incompatible dimmer. If the problem began after installing new LED bulbs or a dimmer switch, having an electrician check compatibility may provide a relatively simple solution.

Lights Dim When an Appliance Turns On

Have you noticed the lights briefly dim when your air conditioner, refrigerator or another large appliance starts?

Large appliances require additional electricity when their motors start. A slight, momentary dimming may occur, but significant or repeated dimming deserves attention—especially if it happens in multiple rooms.

The problem could involve the circuit, electrical connections or your home’s ability to handle its current electrical demand.

Modern households often use considerably more electrical equipment than older homes were originally designed to support.

Multiple Flickering Lights Are a Bigger Concern

When lights flicker throughout several rooms—or the entire house—the problem may extend beyond an individual fixture.

Loose or deteriorating electrical connections can cause inconsistent power and should not be ignored. Other warning signs can include buzzing switches or outlets, frequently tripped breakers, warm electrical components or unusual burning odors.

If flickering is accompanied by sparks, heat, smoke or a burning smell, stop using the affected electrical equipment and have the problem evaluated promptly.

Your Electrical Panel May Be Part of the Problem

Your electrical panel distributes electricity throughout your home. As electrical demands increase, an older or overloaded system may begin showing warning signs.

Flickering lights don’t automatically mean you need a new panel. That’s why professional troubleshooting matters. An experienced electrician can determine whether the issue originates with a fixture, circuit, connection, panel or another part of the electrical system.

Gowdy Electric provides troubleshooting, electrical repairs, safety inspections, circuit work and panel upgrades throughout the Charlotte area.

Electrical problems rarely improve by being ignored. If your lights repeatedly flicker, dim or behave differently than they used to, having the system checked can give you answers before the problem becomes more disruptive.
